Now past the Vernal Equinox, the Midwest has struggled to extricate itself from winter's grip, but the signs are everywhere. After a round of heavy, wet snows and blustery winds, the lengthening days are gradually warming the land and lakes. The trees are budding, early flora are emerging from the once-frozen soil, and only the deep woods retain occasional vestiges of fallen snow, the final reminders of our transit through the cold, dark season in our wake. Ironically, May is the month with the highest number of suicides. Why? We think it's a matter of comparison. A suicidal person's inner darkness and despair stands in stark contrast to the light and life emerging all around them, making it seem all the worse. It also leaves such a soul feeling disconnected and alienated from those who are reveling in spring's arrival. Familiarize yourself with the warning signs of potential self-harm in others, and reach out to those who seem at risk.
