In the upper Midwest, January is the peak of the Winter season. This month, we've enjoyed a base of snow for those who ski, snowshoe and sled. Many mornings have been punctuated by freezing fog, a weather event that coats tree branches, pine needles and dry grasses with delicate crystalline designs. And, as the Earth slowly tilts back toward the Sun, the days gradually lengthen. Despite more solar energy reaching the Northern Hemisphere, several more months of atmospheric heating will be required before the warmth and light of Spring emerge. For now, enjoy the Earth's cold, quiet repose.
